Helping Hand Scholarship

The Magic Penny Inc. is a non-profit organization that has been promoting educational, agricultural and economic programs in rural Sierra Leone, West Africa, for two
decades. TMP’s aim is to fund and sustain support for self-development in a cluster of coastal villages in the Bompehtoke area.

Toward this end, TMP supports two primary schools, and has constructed a community center, sanitation facilities, and wells for potable water. In addition, TMP funded an effort to keep the villages Ebola and Covid-19 free, has supported university students who have gained their teaching degrees and returned to teach in the village, and has
maintained the facilities in Bompehtoke, among other projects.

Several years ago, The Magic Penny established Chief Pieh scholarships to send qualifying children to middle school in other villages. Now, these students have
reached high school age and support for them to continue their education is critical and more costly. High schools are located farther from the villages, requiring students to
board with families and friends in other towns and larger cities.

To address this need, The Magic Penny Helping Hand Scholarship program will provide support for students to continue their high school education for four years. A scholarship fee of $250 will cover tuition, books, uniforms and travel, and will help to defray some of the costs of boarding with other families for one year. Scholarship monies can be paid in total, or in three installments, due March 15, August 15 and December 15.

How to Sponsor a Student Scholarship:

The Global Justice Club
of Harborfields High School

For four years, The Global Justice Club of Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, NY, raised money for The Magic Penny. Under the supervision of faculty member Michelle DaSilva, the students put on a fantastic talent show, and then handed over the check. Thanks Global Justice!
